Why NGMA Exists: Martial Arts Should Be for Everyone

New Generation Martial Arts began with a simple belief: martial arts should be for everyone.

Not only fighters. Not only naturally athletic people. Not only those who already look confident enough to walk through the door.

Everyone.

NGMA was started by Alice in 2012 after experiencing first-hand how unwelcoming the martial arts world could sometimes be. There were gyms where she was refused the opportunity to train simply because she was a woman.

Rather than accepting that martial arts wasn’t a space for her, she decided to help create something different.

A gym where women would never have to question whether they belonged. A gym where complete beginners would be taken seriously. A gym where someone could train for fitness, confidence, friendship or personal development without being made to feel that fighting was the only goal that mattered.

That idea became New Generation Martial Arts.

Creating the place that should have existed

NGMA wasn’t created simply because Southampton needed another martial arts gym.

It was created because martial arts had the potential to give people so much, but too many people felt excluded from it before they had even begun.

Traditional gym environments could sometimes feel intimidating. Newcomers might assume everyone else was fitter, tougher or more experienced. Women could feel that they were entering a space that wasn’t designed with them in mind. People interested in learning martial arts without becoming fighters could struggle to see where they fitted.

Alice wanted to build the place she should have been able to walk into herself.

A place where anyone could train.

Martial arts is about more than fighting

NGMA has always taken martial arts seriously. Our coaches have competed at high levels, our members test themselves in competition and our classes teach genuine, practical skills.

But being serious about martial arts doesn’t mean everyone has to become a fighter.

Some people join NGMA because they want to compete. Others want to improve their fitness, learn self-defence, build confidence, manage stress or try something they have always been curious about.

Some are looking for something they can be proud of. Others are simply looking for people.

All of those reasons matter.

You don’t have to arrive with confidence. You don’t need previous experience or a certain body type. You don’t have to prove that you’re tough enough to be here.

You only need to be willing to begin.

A place to belong

The most important thing we want members to gain from NGMA is a place to belong.

That sense of belonging can be difficult to explain until you experience it. It’s being welcomed when you arrive. It’s having training partners who notice when you improve. It’s coaches who understand your goals and take your development seriously.

It’s having people beside you when you compete, celebrate a promotion or finally achieve something you once thought was beyond you.

It’s also having somewhere to go after a difficult day. Somewhere you can train, focus and leave feeling better than when you arrived.

For many members, NGMA becomes much more than the place where they exercise. It becomes part of their routine, their friendships and their identity.

A home away from home in Southampton

Southampton has a large student community, with people arriving every year from different cities across the UK and countries around the world.

Moving somewhere new can be exciting, but it can also feel lonely. Many students arrive without an established group of friends or the familiar support they had at home.

NGMA gives people somewhere to go, something positive to be part of and a community they can begin connecting with immediately.

Members don’t only meet during classes. Our social events, competitions, shows and gatherings give people opportunities to spend time together away from regular training.

International students train alongside people who have moved to Southampton from other parts of the UK, as well as members who have lived locally all their lives. Different backgrounds, cultures and experiences meet on the same mats.

For many, NGMA becomes a home away from home. The friendships formed through training often continue long after university, competition or someone’s time in Southampton has ended.

People may originally join to learn martial arts or improve their fitness, but many leave with lifelong friends.

Strong coaching without the ego

NGMA prides itself on the calibre of its coaching team. Many of our coaches have competed at the highest levels within their chosen disciplines and bring real, tested experience into their classes.

However, competitive experience alone doesn’t make someone a great coach.

Our coaches are here to teach, encourage and help people develop at their own pace. The person attending their first session deserves the same care and attention as the experienced competitor preparing for an event.

Strong coaching should build people up. It should challenge students without belittling them and create confidence without creating ego.

Martial arts should make people stronger without making them feel smaller.

No politics, no cliques, no ego

As NGMA has grown, the culture has remained central to every decision we make.

No politics. No cliques. No ego.

That doesn’t mean training is always easy. Martial arts should challenge you. There will be difficult sessions, frustrating techniques and moments when progress feels slow.

But the environment around that challenge should still feel supportive.

Nobody should feel excluded because they are new, because they don’t compete or because they don’t fit somebody else’s idea of what a martial artist should look like.

Everyone has the right to learn, grow and take up space on the mats.

Different disciplines, one community

Today, NGMA offers Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, MMA, Muay Thai, kickboxing, boxing, wrestling and strength and conditioning from our gym in Woolston, Southampton.

Each discipline has its own techniques, traditions and coaching team, but they are all connected by the same purpose.

We want people to learn real skills. We want experienced athletes to have opportunities to develop and compete. We want complete beginners to feel comfortable taking their first step.

Most importantly, we want people from different backgrounds and with different goals to feel part of the same community.

The next generation of martial arts

The name New Generation Martial Arts has always represented more than a timetable of classes.

It represents a different idea of what a martial arts gym can be.

A place with high standards but no unnecessary ego. A place where competitive fighters and complete beginners can train under the same roof. A place where women are not merely allowed to participate but are central to the story, leadership and future of the gym.

A place where ordinary people can achieve extraordinary things.

NGMA exists because Alice was once made to feel that martial arts wasn’t for her.

Everything we have built since then is our answer:

Martial arts is for you.

You are welcome here.

You belong.
