Connor Tymon Awarded His Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt

Updated: Aug 21

Everyone at NGMA is incredibly proud to celebrate coach and professional fighter Connor Tymon receiving his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt.

A BJJ black belt represents years of consistent training, technical development and dedication. It is an achievement that cannot be rushed, making Connor’s promotion a significant milestone in an already impressive martial arts career.

From the training room to ONE Championship

Connor competes professionally on the global stage with ONE Championship, testing his skills against elite-level opposition.

His experience as an active professional fighter gives him a valuable perspective as a coach. The techniques he teaches have been developed through years of training and tested under genuine competitive pressure.

Connor’s knowledge extends beyond Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He understands how grappling, wrestling and striking work together, allowing him to help students see the bigger picture behind every technique.

A coach and gym owner

Alongside competing professionally and coaching at NGMA, Connor is also the owner of Brotherhood MMA on the Isle of Wight.

Running his own martial arts gym has given him extensive experience in developing fighters, supporting beginners and building a strong training community.

Connor understands that people begin martial arts for many different reasons. Some dream of competing at the highest level, while others want to improve their fitness, develop confidence or simply enjoy learning something new.

He brings that understanding and experience to every class he teaches at NGMA.

Bringing modern techniques into every class

Connor is always studying how martial arts continues to evolve. If a technique has recently been used in the UFC or another major competition, there is a good chance he will be breaking it down in class soon afterwards.

He has a talent for taking techniques used at the highest level and explaining them in a clear, practical way. This gives NGMA members the opportunity to learn modern and relevant skills while continuing to develop the strong fundamentals every martial artist needs.

What are the belt levels in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

For adult students, the five main Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu belts are:

White belt: Where every BJJ journey begins and students learn the essential positions, movements and principles.

Blue belt: Represents a strong understanding of the fundamentals and the ability to apply them during live training.

Purple belt: An advanced level at which students develop greater technical depth and begin building a distinctive individual game.

Brown belt: A period of refining techniques, addressing weaknesses and developing a highly effective and complete approach to BJJ.

Black belt: Represents exceptional technical ability, experience, commitment and a deep understanding of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Unlike some martial arts, progressing through the BJJ belt system usually takes many years. Promotions are based on much more than simply attending classes. Coaches consider technical ability, practical application, consistency, attitude and overall development on the mats.

Every student progresses at a different pace, so the goal is not to race towards the next belt. Each stage of the journey brings new challenges, achievements and opportunities to learn.

A thoroughly deserved achievement

Receiving a BJJ black belt does not mark the end of the journey. Instead, it represents the beginning of a new chapter, with even more opportunities to learn, compete, teach and help others develop.

Connor’s promotion reflects his commitment to his own training as well as the time and energy he gives to the people around him.

We are fortunate to have a coach with his experience, enthusiasm and competitive insight as part of the NGMA team.

Congratulations, Connor. Your black belt is thoroughly deserved, and everyone at NGMA is proud to celebrate this milestone with you.
