How to Get to NGMA Southampton: Parking, Trains, Buses, Bikes and Scooters

New Generation Martial Arts entrance on Hazel Road in Woolston, Southampton

Getting to your first martial arts class should be straightforward. You have enough to think about without wrestling a bus timetable or making parking your opening opponent.

NGMA is based at First Floor, 12 Hazel Road, Woolston, Southampton, SO19 7GA. We are close to Woolston station, local bus routes and the Itchen Bridge, with several options for travelling to us from across Southampton.

Whether you are coming for BJJ, MMA, striking or your first Beginners Academy session, here is the simplest way to find us.

A quick Itchen Bridge update

We will start with the issue many of our members have been dealing with recently.

The maintenance work on the Itchen Bridge has affected journeys into Woolston, particularly during evening closures. We know it has been frustrating. Nothing tests your composure quite like being ready to train and discovering that the bridge has other plans.

The good news is that the project is now in its final phases. Resurfacing has been completed and the temporary 20 mph restriction has been removed. Some overnight vehicle closures may continue while the remaining work is finished, so it is still worth checking the latest council update before travelling.

During overnight vehicle closures, the bridge has remained open to pedestrians and cyclists. The council has said that work will continue through the remainder of August, with confirmation still to come on whether any further overnight work will be needed in early September.

For the latest information, check the official Itchen Bridge maintenance update before setting off.

Getting to NGMA by train

Woolston railway station is nearby and is a useful option if you are travelling from Southampton Central or elsewhere along the local rail line.

From the station, NGMA is a short walk through Woolston to Hazel Road. Once you arrive, use our main entrance, head straight upstairs and take the first door to check in at reception.

Train times can change, so we recommend using the official Woolston station page to check live arrivals, departures and any disruption before you travel.

Getting here by bus

Woolston is served by several local bus connections, and services in the east of Southampton are improving from Sunday 30 August 2026.

The new Bluestar 6 will run between Southampton city centre, the Itchen Bridge, Peartree Avenue, Bitterne and Townhill Park. The service is designed to improve connections between Townhill Park, Bitterne, Woolston and the city centre, making it particularly useful for people travelling to NGMA from those areas.

The Bluestar 16 is also being extended beyond the city centre towards Southampton General Hospital. This should create better connections for people travelling across the city, including from Townhill Park, Bitterne, Northam and central Southampton.

Bus routes and times do change, so please check the latest Bluestar timetable information when planning your journey. The Breeze travel app can also help you compare public transport options across Southampton.

Coming by Voi scooter or e-bike

If you are already in Southampton, a Voi scooter or e-bike can be a convenient way to reach Woolston without getting involved in the great British sport of hunting for a parking space.

Voi vehicles must be collected and left in designated parking bays shown in the app. Availability can vary, so check the app before travelling and make sure you finish your ride in an approved bay.

Rental e-scooters are for riders aged 18 or over who hold at least a provisional driving licence. Voi e-bikes are available from age 16. Follow the road rules, use permitted roads or cycle routes and do not ride on pedestrian-only pavements.

Southampton City Council has more information in its Voi scooter and e-bike guidance.

Cycling to NGMA

Cycling is another simple option, especially if you live in Woolston or the surrounding areas.

We have a bike rack area at NGMA, so you have somewhere suitable to secure your bike while you train. Please bring a good lock and make sure your bike is secured properly before heading upstairs.

It is also worth checking your route before leaving, particularly while the final Itchen Bridge works are taking place.

Parking near NGMA

If you are driving, there are a few options close to the gym.

Oakbank Road Car Park is only a few minutes' walk from NGMA and is a useful choice if you would rather head directly to a marked car park. It is also very reasonably priced. The current short-stay charges are:

  • Up to one hour: 50p

  • Up to two hours: £1

That makes it a handy option for most NGMA classes without parking costing almost as much as your journey. The council has proposed changes that may allow longer stays in future, so please check the signs when you arrive for the latest restrictions and prices.

There is also free parking on some nearby streets. Restrictions can vary by road, time and day, so always read the local signs rather than trusting a blog, a friend or that one suspiciously confident person who says, “It'll be fine.” We cannot guarantee that a particular space will be available.

Please allow a little extra time before your first class. Arriving five or ten minutes early gives you time to park, find the entrance and check in without having to perform your warm-up on the stairs.
